Knock Knock. Who's There? FRAUD.

Friday, Jun 13, 2008

LITTLE ROCK –Recently, sales people have been canvassing Little Rock neighborhoods selling home security systems at purportedly discounted rates in exchange for placing the company's sign on the homeowner's property. While the offer sounds sweet, it is actually a ruse to ensnare people into signing costly long-term monitoring agreements with a company that installs ineffective equipment and provides substandard service. Accordingly, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel issued this consumer alert to warn Arkansans about this scam and similar door-to-door sales of home security services.

"We all want the added piece of mind that comes with knowing that our homes, and our families are as safe as can be," said McDaniel. "That's why it is important to shop around for the best deal from the best company and to avoid offers that sound too good to be true."

If you find a home security company sales representative on your doorstep, here are some hints to help you detect the scam:

(1) The salesperson claims to be a representative of a legitimate, well-known security company and may even wear a uniform bearing a company logo. Some crafty con-men even change the company name to something very similar in sound and spelling to a legitimate company. No matter what the salesperson looks like or who he purports to represent, remember that most reputable companies that provide home security do not solicit sales door-to-door.

(2) The salesperson asks you to sign a contract without assessing your home's security vulnerabilities first. A reputable company will inspect your home to figure out the type and placement of equipment that best suits your individual needs and then prepare a plan and contract.

(3) You are told that this is a one-time offer or that the system can be installed and activated that same day. In reality, a lot of planning is necessary to install an effective security system. Furthermore, high pressure tactics are rarely employed by companies whose business depends on providing quality customer-service. A legitimate company will let you weigh your options and will review the system details and notification procedures with you.

If you have been the target of this home security sales scam or if you want to find out more about a particular company's credentials, contact the Public Protection Department of the Attorney General's Office via email at oag@ArkansasAG.gov or by calling 501-682-2341 (Little Rock) or 800-482-8982 (toll-free statewide).
