THE ARKANSAS MINORITY HEALTH COMMISSION HOSTS HEALTH SCREENING EVENT
The Arkansas Minority Health Commission (AMHC) in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Health, Sevier County Coalition (Sevier County Health Unit), will host a Community Health Fair and free health screening event on
Thursday, July 30, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Cultural Awareness Center located at 110 DeQueen Avenue in DeQueen, Arkansas.
The mission of the Arkansas Minority Health Commission is to ensure all minority Arkansans access to health care that is equal to the care provided to other citizens of the state and to seek ways to provide education, raise awareness, and prevent diseases and conditions that are prevalent among minority populations.
The Arkansas Minority Health Commission conducts free health screenings throughout the state. In particular, we aim to provide these services to the minority communities of Sevier County and surrounding counties that otherwise may not be able to access these types of services, said Idonia Trotter, Executive Director of the Arkansas Minority Health Commission. We will have Spanish interpreters at both the Community Health Fair and the Public Forum later on that evening. In addition, literature will be in both Spanish and English, Trotter stated.
Free health screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, HIV/AIDS, immunization, vision, sickle cell, dental and many more will be provided. Health related vendors will be on hand to provide important information. A free box lunch will be provided to each health fair participant.
Later that evening, The Senate Subcommittee on Minority Health of the Arkansas General Assembly will hold a Public Forum and Legislative Meeting on Thursday, July 30, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Cultural Awareness Center located at 110 DeQueen Avenue in DeQueen, Arkansas. Although the meeting is open to all residents, minority residents of the area are encouraged to attend. Residents will have an opportunity to share with legislators what type of health services they would like to have in their region or county and ask questions of their elected officials. Senator Jack Crumbly, Chair of the Subcommittee on Minority Health and other committee members will be present. Local representatives, senators, county judges and mayors have also been invited. Dinner will be provided free of charge to all attendees.
The Arkansas Minority Health Commission is providing free transportation for any resident that need a ride to either event.
