National HIV/AIDS Strategy: Reducing New Infections, Improving Care, Ending Health Disparities
The Obama administration released the National HIV/AIDS Strategy on July 13. President Obama in a press conference at the White House said, “It’s not the question of what to do, but will we do it.”
The administration devised a comprehensive approach to mapping out the National HIV/AIDS Strategy that included conversations with those living with HIV/AIDS, health care providers, business leaders, faith leaders and the scientific community.
In the July 13th press conference, President Obama highlighted the following strategies to HIV/AIDS prevention:
•increase prevention of new HV/AIDS cases through testing, education, and drugs to prevent mother-to-newborn transmission;
•improvement of medical care by stopping insurance companies from denying medical coverage and creating a market place for affordable medical care; and
•reducing health disparities by combating the disease in communities where the need is great.
The Obama administration is aware that the new strategy comes at a bad time for cash strapped states. However, President Obama pointed out that federal assistance has increased each year since 2009 and will continue to increase during his administration to help combat this preventable disease.
