The Archival Technician works under direct supervision and is responsible for preparing and processing archival and historical materials for microfilming. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Prepares archival and historical materials for microfilming. Processes and proofs microfilm, documents microfilming activities, compiles data, and prepares required activity reports. Records receipt of current and purchased newspapers on microfilm and any other archival or historical materials into database. Arranges microfilmed newspapers for recycling and prepares records for retention and off-site storage. Prepares and mail requests for missing and/or damaged newspapers. Responds to customers by mail and sends requested duplicated materials. Maintains inventory of supplies and orders supplies as needed. Provides technical customer service support to other departments, staff, and the general public. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of processing and repairing microfilm. Knowledge of computers and software application programs. Knowledge of filing and recordkeeping procedures. Knowledge of customer service principles. Ability to perform accurate data entry and manipulate data to generate reports anddocuments. Ability to analyze documents and determine compliance with rules, regulations, andprocedures.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus two years of years ofspecialized training and/or experience in library science, historical archival or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

This is a full time position with the Arkansas State Archives an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage in Little Rock. Job Duties:
Processes newly acquired and existing archival collections, state records, and audiovisual materials according to established agency procedures and archival best practices for the arrangement of archival records.
Creates descriptive tools for accessing agency collections and records according to agency procedures and archival best practices.
Assists the general public with using State Archivesí resources locating and retrieving materials, navigating the website and digital resources, and advising researchers on the location of other historical resources outside the agency.
Assists Reference staff with responding to research questions from the general public in compliance with agency rules.
Assists the execution of public programs, like workshops and seminars coordinated by the agency and in collaboration with other organizations.
Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Two years specialized training and/or experience in library science, historical archival or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those possessing experience in an archives or library setting, and with knowledge of audiovisual formats and their preservation requirements.

Special Requirements:
Must be able/willing to work Saturdays. Ability to lift 40 lbs. with or without accommodations. Possess excellent computer skills. Occasional work outside normal business hours and occasional travel for workshops or to pick up collections may be required. A valid driversí license and a pre-employment criminal background check is required. Position is also subject to drug screening.
