The Education Counselor is responsible for testing, assessing, and counseling individuals and providing group educational and vocational guidance services. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Compiles, organizes, and analyzes information about individuals through records, tests, interviews, and professional sources to assess their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics and determine vocational and academic placement of students. Provides career counseling to students regarding chosen vocation by assisting students in assessment interpretation and program selection, providing information on financial aid, social support agencies, and other educational institution information. Counsels special needs students and at-risk students individually or in group sessions concerning social, civic, personal, and educational problems and refers students to alternate sources for assistance. Works with instructors to develop an Individual Written Vocational Plan for special needs and disabled students and monitors program by observing student's progress. Advises and educates students, counselors, civic organizations, social service agencies, and other interest groups through presentations and workshops. Monitors and documents job market information, including local industry needs and vocational skill requirements, for employment and maintains confidential student records. Assists instructors in obtaining and compiling student follow-up information and administers Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) test. Attends seminars, workshops, and conferences to maintain professional development, networking opportunities, appropriate credentials, and assists with special school functions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of vocational education, job placement, career opportunities, and evaluation. Knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling and testing assessment. Ability to obtain and provide information, guidance, and counseling to students.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a master's degree in education, counseling, or counselor education; plus one year of experience in counseling or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
Preferred Qualifications
Must currently be licensed as an Arkansas School Counselor or be eligible to add school counseling certification to Arkansas license.

Must be fluent(Intermediate Plus) in American Sign Language (ASL) or be able to obtain the proficiency within 1 year of employment.

Job Description: The successful candidate will advocate for students academic, career, and personal/ social needs and work to ensure these needs are addressed at every level of the school experience and support the achievement of the identified goals for every student. This may involve assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs). The candidate will also maintain due process paperwork when needed as well as ongoing communication with parents. The School Counselor will assist in completing Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), Manifestation Determinations, and developing individual behavior and safety plans for students as needed. He or she will participate in creating and maintaining an environment of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Also, he or she will be involved in collaboration and teamwork with School Based Mental Health (SBMH) programming. Support, programming, and planning will be provided in the school and dormitory settings. Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualification: Strong Sign Language Skills,

Degree in deaf education with an emphasis in early intervention and early childhood special education Knowledge of early intervention best practices for young children who are deaf and or hard of hearing Knowledge of early hearing detection and intervention Knowledge and skills in the coaching model of intervention and family centered practices Knowledge of Authentic Child Assessment Practices and skills in assessing young children who are deaf or hard of hearing, monitoring a child's language development and developing intervention plans that result in improved child outcomes, particularly language outcomes.

This is a 10-month position and will begin for the 2017-2018 school year starting August 7, 2017.

A state and federal background check will be conducted. MUST COMPLETE a State of Arkansas application. RESUME WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IN LIEU OF APPLICATION. Mandatory Direct deposit and 6%contributory Teacher Retirement is a condition of employment. All persons selected for employment must submit to a drug test as a precondition of employment.
