Summary
The Psychologist is responsible for diagnosing and treating mental disorders, learning disabilities, and cognitive, behavioral, and emotional problems using individual and group therapies. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Supervises a professional staff by interviewing, hiring, assigning and reviewing work and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Selects, administers, scores, and interprets psychological tests in order to obtain information on client intelligence, achievements, interests, and personalities. Develops and implements individual treatment plans by specifying type, frequency, intensity, and duration of therapy. Evaluates the effectiveness of counseling or treatments and the accuracy and completeness of diagnoses, and modifies plans and diagnoses as necessary. Develops, directs, and participates in training programs for staff and students and evaluates activities engaged in patient assessment and treatment. Counsels individuals and groups regarding problems such as stress, substance abuse, and family situations, to modify behavior and/or improve personal, social, and vocational adjustment. Identifies psychological, emotional, or behavioral issues and diagnoses disorders using information obtained from interviews, tests, records, and reference materials. Obtains and studies medical, psychological, social, and family histories by interviewing individuals, couples, and/or families. Prepares and maintains written reports and required paperwork. Testifies in court as an expert witness to provide psychological insight and explain results of psychological examinations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Ability to conduct individual/group counseling sessions and develop individualized treatmentplans. Ability to prepare reports and maintain files. Ability to monitor and document behavior patterns and modify programs. Ability to instruct others in the implementation of psychological procedures. Ability to testify in court as an expert witness.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited institution or a substantially similar doctoral degree in a closely allied field; plus one year of experience performing psychological therapy and individual evaluations.
Preferred Qualifications
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Mist be licensed as a Psychologist by the State Board of Examiners in Psychology in accordance with ACA 17-97-302. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
