The Chemist is responsible for conducting chemical analysis. This position is governed by the Association of Analytical Chemists standards, state and federal laws, and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Plans, organizes, coordinates, and conducts professional level quantitative and qualitativechemical analysis and documents results. May guide laboratory technicians on the use of laboratory equipment and preparation forlaboratory tests. Sets up equipment for analysis, calibrates instruments, and prepares standard solutionsand reagents for use in chemical analysis. Assists with maintaining lab equipment and instruments including glassware usingspecified cleaning techniques. Conducts proficiency tests of laboratories and institutions for quality control of testingprograms. May audit lab records of law enforcement agencies, petroleum industry, independentlaboratories, and hospitals to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. May appear in court when analytical results are disputed to explain and/or verify analyticalresults. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry and chemical analysis. Knowledge of standard and specialized laboratory equipment. Ability to perform chemical analysis using standard and specialized laboratory equipment. Ability to prepare laboratory equipment and perform laboratory tests. Ability to write descriptive results of analysis and appear as expert witness in court. Ability to use different instrument operating software and Laboratory Information Management Systems.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a bachelorís degree in chemistry; plus two years of experience in a chemistry laboratory or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
Preferred Qualifications
The Virology laboratory technician will be an integral part of processing client submitted cases via conducting diagnostic testing, typically in the form of PCR methodologies. This job will require working with and processing animal tissues and fluids for disease identification utilizing 45 different scope methods. The incumbent will be expected to work alongside other technical staff and report to the Virology Supervisor. Preferred qualifications for desired candidates are listed below:
Documented experience (2 years, minimum) working in a diagnostic or research laboratory;
Basic understanding and operation of laboratory tools such as qPCR, Western Blot, and ELISA;
Documented experience working in a formal Quality Management System.
Proficiency in pipette usage, solution preparation, and aseptic technique;
Ability to work efficiently and in a time-dependent manner;
Capable of contributing to a team atmosphere;
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
The ability and willingness to regularly wear personal protective equipment and to comply with fit testing requirements is a fundamental requirement of this position.
This position involves routine handling of specimens of animal bodily fluids, tissues, and microbiological cultures.
Vaccination against Rabies is required, as is documented maintenance of titer.
A minimum of a bachelors degree is required in one of the laboratory sciences, for example chemistry, biology, microbiology, etc.
