The Department of Workforce Services (DWS) Unemployment Insurance (UI) Investigator isresponsible for conducting investigations to prevent and identify improper payments ofunemployment insurance benefits and reviews claims as a control measure. This position isgoverned by state and federal laws and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Conducts investigations on randomly selected sample of unemployment insurance claims to determine accuracy of payments or denial of payments. Contacts claimants for fact-finding interviews, obtains claimant statements, and makes fraud/non-fraud determinations regarding earnings issues. Obtains payroll information from employers and compares with earnings reported by the claimant. Reviews and verifies case information for accuracy in following regulations, laws, policies and procedures. Reviews and verifies work search contacts reported by claimants, educational institutions, union memberships, and all aspects of eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits in sample. Writes separation and non-separation determinations, and prepares case summaries for distribution to appropriate personnel. Promotes public relations through contacts with employers, state and local officials, local offices, general public, court officials, and law enforcement. Participates in special projects. Performs industry surveys and special audits. Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Job Dimensions
Occasional in-state travel is required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of unemployment insurance laws, rules, and regulations. Knowledge of investigative techniques involved in unemployment insurance claims. Ability to analyze and investigate unemployment insurance claims according to agency policy and procedures, state laws, and regulations. Ability to interpret manuals, rules, and regulations. Ability to prepare and present oral and written information.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration or a related field; plus one year of experience in processing or adjudicating claims or conducting research and investigations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must possess a valid Arkansas drivers license. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
