Labor Inspector

The Labor Inspector is responsible for inspecting facilities within the state for compliance in the areas of elevator, building, boiler, fire, and electrical codes depending on assignment. This position is governed by state and federal laws, applicable state and national codes and standards, and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Checks design, blueprints, and engineer's calculations for code compliance and use of code approved materials. Conducts inspections at construction sites to ensure code compliance and notes any items for corrective action by contractors. Prepares inspection reports and issues/denies operating permits. Conducts routine annual and/or semi-annual inspections and verifies that all operating controls and required safety devices are in place and in good working order and that a licensed operator is on duty if required. Approves or disapproves license renewals and recommends necessary repairs and/or corrections. Prepares written reports of all inspections performed, listing any defects, code violations, or unsafe conditions. Investigates complaints of equipment performance, accidents, or possible unsafe conditions and documents findings. Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Job Dimensions
Frequent in-state travel within an assigned area and exposure to weather elements and construction sites is required. Occasional climbing of ladders and or stairs at construction sites is required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of state and federal health and safety laws and regulations. Knowledge of applicable American National Standards Institute (ANSI) codes andstandards. Ability to conduct on-site inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with allapplicable codes and standards. Ability to review reports for accuracy and completeness. Ability to investigate complaints of equipment performance or unsafe conditions, documentfindings and recommend corrective action. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal educational equivalent of a bachelors degree in engineering, construction management or a related field; plus two years of experience in safety inspections and investigations. ORThe formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; completion of a journeymansprogram in the appropriate field; plus three years of experience in safety inspections andinvestigations.
Preferred Qualifications
The employee must hold a valid and current National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors commission with A endorsement or be test eligible. The certification must be obtained within 2 attempts and 18 months of employment. A current state of Arkansas drivers license is also required. Proficiency using MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook are necessary. Attention to detail, accuracy and a customer service-oriented attitude are essential for success in this position. The highest level of confidentiality and discretion must always be maintained.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must be certified in appropriate journeymans inspection field by the Department of Labor. Must possess a valid Arkansas drivers license. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. The Arkansas Department of Labor and Licensing, Division of Labor fosters, promotes and develops the health, safety and, welfare of wage earners in Arkansas, providing services and enforcing laws to improve working conditions and enhance opportunities for safe and profitable employment.

The Boiler Inspector inspects high and low pressure steam boilers, hot water heater boilers, hot water storage, and potable water heaters, air tanks, anhydrous ammonia, and other pressure vessels to verify conformance to safety codes and standards issued by governmental agency, recognized professional technical organizations, and assigns state regulatory numbers to objects as required. Witnesses standard tests such as accumulation, and hydrostatic tests to verify condition of boilers and other vessels. Keeps records and prepares reports of inspections and investigations for administrative or legal authorities. Administers boiler operator examinations and processes completed applications of successful and unsuccessful examinees. Frequent travel is required, the employee will be reimbursed for travel expenses in accordance with state and department policies. This position will be assigned to North West Arkansas and the employee must reside in this vicinity.

SALARY: The starting salary is $40,340.
